Excise taxes when shipping a vehicle to PR

Transporting your car from the United States to Puerto Rico takes a little more work than just contacting Gallery Shipping to carry out the transport and moving your vehicle, you also have to pay excise taxes to the Government Department of the Treasury. Excise taxes are custom fees imposed by the government on items that enter the island.

Items that pay excise taxes include gasoline, products made from oil, cigarettes, cement, vehicles, boats, heavy equipment, among others. Local and federal government agencies, veterans, active military, churches, and nonprofit entities are exempt from paying these taxes when moving such items to Puerto Rico.

The tax payment to transport your vehicle to Puerto Rico according to the Department of Treasury is a minimum tax of $750.00 for vehicles. SUVs pay 20% of their price listing on the island, while trucks, ATVs and motorcycles pay 10% of their price listing for the excise tax.

“In no case shall automobiles, propellants, buses, trucks pay a tax of less than seven hundred and fifty (750) dollars,” quotes Law #70 of the Internal Revenue Code of Puerto Rico.

If the taxable price of the vehicle is greater than $5,929 up to $10,000, you will be taxed $750 plus 13% of the excess of $5,929. If the price of your vehicle is greater than $10,280 up to $20,560, $1,316 is taxed plus 25% of the excess of $20,560. If the price is $30,561 up to $43,170, you’re taxed $6,886 plus 35% of the excess of $30,561.
